Grace, 65, shares her story about how Be Well has helped her loose weight and improve her health.
My weight had been increasing over the past 2 years and I did not know why. I thought my diet was ok and I was physically active. The weight gain made me feel very low and I had no motivation to do anything. When possible I avoided going out as I didn’t feel good in my clothes. Nothing looked right, I felt frumpy and angry with myself. My sleep pattern was not good I was always tired because I did not sleep very well.
I was not sure what to do, I’d joined SWorld in the past and although I had lost weight I soon put it back on. I had a routine appointment with Antonia (practice nurse) at Lockside Medical centre. I spoke to her about how unhappy I was with my weight gain and she referred me to Margaret the Health & Wellbeing advisor.
During the first session Margaret asked me the question’ How confident are you that you will lose weight’ it really made me think and I thought yes, I can do it with support. Although I thought my diet was ok it was the small things that were having an impact on my weight and I was not very active. I now eat more often & choose healthier options and I have reduced my food portions especially my bread and potato intake. The strange thing is that I feel more satisfied and enjoy my food more.
I knew I was not active but I did not want to go to a gym. I decided I could walk every day and that is what I do. I walk for 45 mins every day even when it is raining as Margaret says “it’s never the wrong weather, it’s the wrong clothes”
Being able to talk to Margaret made me feel motivated and positive I felt at ease straight away I could tell she was genuine and cared. The sessions were not just about weight they were about me!
I have been taking statins for the past 18 months due to elevated cholesterol levels and I have recently been able to come off them as my levels have come down. I thought I would be on them for life!
I was smoking about 10 cigarettes a day when I came to see Margaret although she did not give me any NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) she gave me the willpower to stop. This has really improved my breathing; I no longer get out of breath when I am walking.
Being able to talk to someone who listens makes a big difference it made me feel happy and valued & this resulted in me want to get healthier.
I have and would recommend Margaret and the Tameside Be Well service to anyone who wants to make small but realistic lifestyle changes. It all started with a conversation with the practice nurse at Lockside.
Grace has managed to loose a fantastic 1st 3lb and has reduced her BMI from 26.6 to a healthy 23.3.
